1746-1793 Spanish Ramon Bayeu Gallery The biography of Jose del Castillo (Madrid, 14.10.1737-Madrid, 5.10.1793) shows that the artist, being in his youth one of the most appropriate painters for becoming a leader of the artistic movement of the Illustrious Absolutism, ends up performing secondary work, paintings for tapestry and some religious works of art, which was not the field where he could best display his talent. Jose del Castillo is a perfect example of how an unhappy destiny can influence on the professional life of a painter under the regime of that time. Surely the unhappy destiny, in point of fact, does not explain anything and we will have to find out the real reasons why one of the most promising careers in painting of the eighteenth century in Spain was crushed. 1423-1451 Italian Stefano di Giovanni Sassetta Gallery Stefano di Giovanni, known as il Sassetta, (Siena 1392 ?C 1450 or 1451) was an Italian painter. He was born in Siena, although there is also an hypothesis that he was born in Cortona. However, the first historical record of him was in Siena in 1423. Di Giovanni was probably the apprentice of Paolo di Giovanni Fei although it is also thought that he may have studied under Benedetto di Bindo. He painted in the semi-archaic Sienese School style of painting. Francesco di Giorgio e di Lorenzo, better known as Vecchietta, is said to have been his apprentice.

Illustrator and Painter. American , 1859-1931 was an American illustrator and painter, born at Woodstock, Va. He studied for a year in Baltimore and for five years in Paris under Cabanel and Bonnat and first attracted attention in New York with his illustrations for Leslie's Weekly. He was best known as the illustrator of Thomas Nelson Page's Unc' Edinburg, the works of Hawthorne, Stevenson, and Mark Twain, although he worked also in oils and water colors. His sympathetic collaboration with the author gave his work an especial charm. He was awarded the Evans prize of the American Water-Color Society in 1900. In 1947.
